USDA Says Okay To Ship U.S. Chicken to China for Cheap Processing (then re-entry to States for human consumption)

China1“Chinese chicken” will soon have a whole new meaning, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently gave the green-light to four chicken processing plants in China, allowing chicken raised and slaughtered in the U.S. to be exported to China for processing, and then shipped back to the U.S. and sold on grocery shelves here. Furthermore, the imported processed poultry will not require a country-of-origin label nor will U.S. inspectors be on site at processing plants in China before it is shipped to the United States for human consumption.
Food safety experts worry about the quality of chicken processed in a country notorious for avian influenza and food-borne illnesses. And they predict that China will eventually seek to broaden the export rules to allow chickens born and raised in China.
“Economically, it doesn’t make much sense,” said Tom Super, spokesman for the National Chicken Council, in a recent interview with the Houston Chronicle. “Think about it: A Chinese company would have to purchase frozen chicken in the U.S., pay to ship it 7,000 miles, unload it, transport it to a processing plant, unpack it, cut it up, process/cook it, freeze it, repack it, transport it back to a port, then ship it another 7,000 miles. I don’t know how anyone could make a profit doing that.”
Bureau of Labor Statistics data estimates that American poultry processors are paid roughly $11 per hour on average. In China, reports have circulated that the country’s chicken workers can earn significantly less—$1 to 2 per hour—which casts doubt on Super’s economic feasibility assessment.
This process is already being used for U.S. seafood. According to the Seattle Times, domestically caught Pacific salmon and Dungeness crab are currently being processed in China and shipped back to the U.S., all because of significant cost savings:
…fish processors in the Northwest, including Seattle-based Trident Seafoods, are sending part of their catch of Alaskan salmon or Dungeness crab to China to be filleted or de-shelled before returning to U.S. tables.
“There are 36 pin bones in a salmon and the best way to remove them is by hand,” says Charles Bundrant, founder of Trident, which ships about 30 million pounds of its 1.2 billion-pound annual harvest to China for processing. “Something that would cost us $1 per pound labor here, they get it done for 20 cents in China.”
China has an infamous reputation as one of the world’s worst food safety offenders. Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a report on a Chinese chicken jerky manufacturer that created dog treats tied to more than 500 dogs’ deaths.
Food Safety News aims to spread awareness of the pending USDA agreement and stop Chinese-processed chicken from ever reaching supermarkets or school lunchrooms.

Go Vegetarian.. All the animal products are laced with chemicals that kill you.. yeah right.. the plant products I am counting on are laced with pesticides, genetically altered etc etc etc.. Air is full of pollutants, water is contaminated, soil is saturated with chemicals.. what is left ? What is clean? Nothing.. let us wait till we sprout a extra limb or tail or a third eye or something interesting.. Profit is all matters and not safety..

Nations need to be self-sustaining. It makes absolutely no sense to send live animals overseas to be killed, tortured for food. I want to know why these corporations are using our markets to fake their profits. Yeah, you could ship a boat many times around the world, expense your business at a loss on your balance sheet, get the government to cover your losses. Your sense of business is pathetic and they need to be audited. Livestock should not be subjected to oversea shipping at all!

Jon Fogel And that begs the question: How long between the time the animal is killed and the time at which it is processed? This could lead to all kinds of organisms growing ...oh, good grief. This could be a terrible nightmare! No, I'm going to say it WILL BE a nightmare at some point in time! I'm going to start raising my own chickens again even if I am an "elderly" lady! Besides that, I'm SICK of all the blood around the bones of commercially processed meats!

This makes absolutely no sense in the real world. But in our system of market capitalism, where "cost efficiency" is the bottom line, it makes perfect sense. Perfectly stupid, illogical, inefficient, ignorant sense. What a sick, decrepit, diseased system ... needs to be put to sleep, buried six feet under, relegated to the history books. It's over! Boycott companies that send chickens to China for processing. We need to get people to sign petitions to stop this; this is not what Americans want. I am tired of corporate America putting the almighty dollar above the health and welfare of Americans. This is not a good idea for so many reasons; why are we allowing it to happen? We are in the midst of raising the hourly wage in America. That makes it more difficult to fight foreign wage labor. In fact, a raise in the minimum wage here in the US would make it impossible to compete with Chinese labor. --- The fact is - we cannot compete with Chinese labor. - because Chinese labor is SLAVE LABOR!
We live in a democracy. China does not. The conditions under which the Chinese process food is borne out in the recent dog food fiasco. We all know about that. The question is - do we want those same faulty safeguards protecting the food that we eat?
If we can't grow, process, and eat "chicken" in our own country - without the help of China - we are fucked! This is the last straw. FUCK CHINA!

One thing that disgusts me about the show, is that week after week, when some entrepenour brings on a product they are manufacturing in America, the sharks all go on about how it needs to be made in China. That is their first idea in order to make more profit. And that is how American business thinks today. Not what is good for consumers, environment, economy, or the long term business outlook, it what is best for their pocketbook.....NOW!

Well we can thank Saint Reagan for this - he singlehandedly switched our traditional American Values of fair play, opportunity, community for "profits trump all" and he also encouraged luxury consumption as a demonstration and proof of success.
We have a long way to go before we recover from Reagan's alzheimer's puppetry act - though we might never know who exactly was pulling the strings behind the most corrupt administration in American History.

The USDA is now, sadly, solely a shill for Big Ag and Big Pharma. The leadership is corrupt, which is a real tragedy for the hundreds of good people who work there. Like the FDA and the EPA, they are dominated by Congress' corrupt dependence on huge donations from industry. They are NOT regulatory agencies, and the harm they have done and continue to do to the nation's health -- people, the environment, and animal health -- is a national disaster.

I think the operative word is "processed". There is no reason to ship chickens sold whole or cut up anywhere but grocery stores. I think it's for processed chicken sold in other, quick meal varieties -- breaded patties, chicken nuggets, etc. I'm not positive, but it seems logical. What doesn't seem logical is how much can they actually save, what with transportation oil, etc.?

End capitalism? End economic freedom? Yeah, you're a genius.
You solve this problem with sensible economic policy. Do you not understand that capitalism is a necessary precursor to freedom? How complicated is that? If you take away economic freedom, there is no freedom.
What Bernie Sanders understands about economics and freedom will fit on the point of a pin. You need to grow up and recognize that we are participating in a global economy now, where you compete or you die. You don't pay McDonalds order takers $15/hour.
Sheesh.

Of course it does. If it didn't they wouldn't do it. The reality is that today you can ship frozen chicken dirt cheap and if you get it to china you can process it for essentially nothing.
Now, Bernie and Hillary want to raise the minimum wage, will just increase the number of items that are "processed" in China.
Donald wants make China pay import tariffs, fees and taxes which China will simply collect back on stuff going the other direction.
There is one solution: When chicken can be processed in the US for the same money it takes to ship chick...See More

Is this problem not supposed to be addressed with import tarrifs. With the goyernment relinquishing controll on imports, and whatever else to supposably shrink the tax dollar, for whatever reason, health safety is likely to suffer. What would be the reason for the demand for everyone in America to have health insurance if we aren't going to get sick or intentionally exposed to toxins It couldn't possibly have something to do with the TPP. What economical sense does sending poltry to China to be processed just to send them back. I'd like to see a cost study on this. It seems just ludicrous.

I can totally believe this. They will have to go to extreme measures to sell the meat by it's "sell by date". All this because of minimum wage. There are plenty of jobless people with qualifications who will work for next to nothing but can't be hired for less than 7-15/hr.

USDA Says Okay To Ship U.S. Chicken to China for Cheap Processing (then re-entry to States for human consumption)really?....how $ chinese workers are getting paid for the pollito?..just like the salmon?.. .“There are 36 pin bones in a salmon and the best way to remove them is by hand,” says Charles Bundrant, founder of Trident, which ships about 30 million pounds of its 1.2 billion-pound annual harvest to China for processing. “Something that would cost us $1 per pound labor here, they get it done for 20 cents in China.”

First off that's disgusting I'll stop eating chicken. It" not safe passing it back and forth and very unhealthy. I would fear diseases. Why can't this job be done in America with Americans doing the work. I will go to my local farmers
